Historically, Derby reinings have been limited to 4 and 5 year olds, but more and more affiliates are opening up their derbies to allow 4,5, and 6 year old horses to compete.

Do you feel that this would attract additional entries and provide more opportunities for 6 year olds, or would it be unfair to the younger horses to compete against 6 year olds for the prestigious honor of a Derby win?

I think adding a class for 6 year olds at the derby would be great for a few reasons...

It would give those excellent 5 year olds a chance to be totally awesome as 6 year olds.

It would give more options to people that "have" to show a profit with their horses, and will encourage longevity of those horses that may have not been mentally or physically ready, which otherwise may have been in rushed training to make the deadline.

As a non pro who trains my horses myself and takes my sweet time about getting there...it would give others like me something else to shoot for.

While I don't believe it would be fair to show a 6 year old with 4 & 5 year olds, I would be all for a completely separate class just for the sixers...

YES! I think it would be a wonderful idea for 6 year olds to compete in Derbies - I know trainers in my area who are hesitant to show 4-year olds in a derby because of their immaturity - they ride them in local shows during their 4-year old year, and enter the derbies in the 5-year old year.

It would also most definitely increase the number of entries in the derbies.

IMHO, I am all for it. I let mine grow and mature before I start them, so I follow the sound mind sound body theory. I don't believe that my 4 year old with limited training will be any further along then a 2 year old with similar training. Very happy to hear this may be an option.

Why not have a Derby Classic just for the six year olds? I am in favor of having an event for the 6 six year olds, but I'm not sure it would be fair to have them compete against the four year olds. Another benefit of having a competition for the six year olds, is that it will help those horses preparing for the USET, which has also helped the 'older' horse. Either way, I think it would be great to have another venue for the six year old.
