NRHA has increased the entry fee for Sire + Dam offspring to $550, which
will effect 2004 entrants. This is an increase of $300 from the previous
$250 entry fee. Of the $550, $500 will go directly to the purse, and $50
is a judges fee.
Do you think this is a reasonable increase?
What do you think about the Sire + Dam program in regards to its effectiveness,
participation structure and results?

Athough
the sire and dam increase is a big jump it was a necessary increase to
offset the sire and dam entries from conyinuing in the red. The S&D entries
have been sharply increasing in cost each year for the futurity. It is
still a best buy as the stud fee is half price and the entry cost is $550
versus the regular entry of $1500. The program is very effective as well
as sucessful as can be seen by the membership parcipitation. the NRHA
has continued to restructure the program and it now includes the Derby
as well as Lawson bronzes for the other divisions instead a bronze for
the open div only (as it used to be). the Derby sire awards aren't much
money but I expect it will increase in the future. the sire and dam program
is one of the best (as well as most successful) programs NRHA has.

The NRHA
sire & dam program is one of the greatest programs in the world. As a
supporter of the program and a breeder who donates breedings to many of
the sire programs within the reining industry, I feel our future depends
on many of these programs.
The NRHA sire awards are quite lucrative for stallion owners.
The cost of entering the the sire & dam colts in the 2004 yr. is well
in line with the industry. Given the cost of preparing a horse for the
NRHA futurity, the cost of the Sire & dam entry is quite small.
The NRHA board considered the past and the future of the program when
deciding on the increase. I am confident that the board is working to
lead the NRHA in a positive direction for the future.

It
seems like a very significant increase. Although it helps to see that
most of it is going to the purse. However I do think what it will do is
reduce the number of people who might enter. Maybe that was the reason
for the increase. If you want the number of entries to drop down then
yup this significant increase will have that effect.
If I have to choose one way or the other - I would say I do not like the
increase - it eliminates perhaps some good horses whose owners/riders
just can't afford it.
