The 2nd Annual CRBC wraps up, handing out over $110,000!
Calgary, Alberta - September 22, 2004 - The Canadian Reining Breeders Classic wrapped up September 18, ranking in the top ten of the NRHA show in the world and host to some of the finest riders in North America including last year's CRBC Futurity Champion and the 2003 NRHA Futurity Winner, Duane Latimer. The CRBC paid out over $113,000 during the course of its 3 day run at PineRidge Equine Park in Winnipeg, MB. In conjunction with the CRBC Classic Classes, the CRBC hosted the first ever Western Canada NRHA Affiliate Finals providing the top 3 finalists with an invite to Oklahoma City and some wonderful prizes supplied by Cowboy Tack, Smith Brothers and the NRHA. Not to mention 4 championship saddles! Two saddles were awarded to the winners of the Cowboy Central Saddle Series. Guy Robertson aboard Freeway Frank (Smart Little Lena X Palefaced Playmate) won the Open saddle and Samantha Griffin on board This Chex On Top (Topsail Whiz X Donna Chex) won the Non Pro saddle. The champion of our Rookie Affiliate Finals, Geri Greenall and her mare, Roseanna Lena (Lenas Wright On X Majors Rosanna) took home a Dick Pieper saddle sponsored by a combination of sponsors including: Equine Unlimited Farrier Services, Gregg Lauder Reining Horses, Shaun Argent Farrier Services, Turco Performance Horses, Wally & Isabel Gimber and the Western Canadian Reining Association. The 4th and final saddle was awarded to Laurie Gimber and her horse JBS Badgers Top Ten for a stellar performance in the NRHA Youth 14 - 18 Affiliate Finals. The addition of the Affiliate Finals created a lot of excitement among riders and will surely expand into a dynamic part of the CRBC. The CRBC expects a higher volume of entries in the Affiliate Final classes next year. Another new and exciting addition to the schedule this year was the Charity Calcutta. CRBC Announcer and Auctioneer, Ron Anderson auctioned off 16 futurity finalists, to raise money for charity and increase crowd participation. With Mr. Anderson's unique style and charisma the CRBC generated proceeds of $4500. With 30% of the total bid going to Camp Arnes, a camp which gives under privileged children a chance to enjoy the country life and 70% going to the winner.
Thanks goes out to Miracle Ranch Equipment of Winnipeg, MB for challenging the Futurity and Derby riders, by offering a brand new horse trailer to the highest scoring rider in either division. Dean Brown was the recipient of the horse trailer for an excellent performance on Hickory Smoked Chex in the both goes of the Open Derby. The Open Futurity Championship went to Troy Heikes, scoring 220.5 on Malt Whizkey, sired by Topsail Whiz out of Jacs Maple Sugar that is owned by Sally Brown of Fox Meadow Farms. Malt Whizkey won $10,000. The Open Reserve Championship went to Duane Latimer, scoring 220 on Westcoast Shiner, sired by Westcoast Whiz out of Shining Bubbles that is owned by Bob Loomis Quarter Horses and Mantanna, LLC. The pair won $5112. In third place was Pat Rodgers on Guaranteed Famous, sired by A Famous Amos and Okies Paulette, owned by David McNiece of London, Ontario $3950.84. Cody Sapergia of Okotoks, Alberta earned fourth place on MS Del Dun It earning $2324.03 in earnings. Cody also, captured fifth place on Nifty Beginning, sired by Topsail Whiz with earnings of $2091.62. Sixth place and a check for $1859.22 went to Jim Anderson, scoring a 216.5 on Smart Lil Checker. Shawna Sapergia snuck into 7th place with a score of 214.5, collecting a paycheck totaling $1394.42. The Ltd Open Futurity Championship went to Pat Rodgers, who also placed third in the Open Futurity. Pat and Guaranteed Famous won $2157.05. Second place went to Jim Anderson and Smart Lil Checker, with earnings of $1712.95. Third place went to newly wed, Clay Webster on Marshalls Chic, sired by Smart Chic Olena out of Genuine Taffy Jac that is owned by Clay Webster Performance Horses. The pair won $1268.85. Fourth place went to Steve DeFrang with a score of 212 on Spun It N Dun It, sired by Hollywood Dun It out of Dock And Dry that is owned by Mikaela Daleiden and Pamela Brink. They collected a check for $634.43. Fifth place and a check for $570.98 went to Gregg Lauder, scoring 211.5 on Lil Smokin Pep, sired by Solanos Peppy out of Scarlet Smolder that is owned by Adrienne Peake.
The Non Pro Futurity Championship went to Samantha Griffin on Chic Olena Whiz, sired by Smart Chic Olena out of This Chex On Top, scoring 215. Ms. Griffin took home a $3000 pay check. Greg Gottschalk and Lil Ruf Doll sired by Lil Ruf Peppy out of Smart Little Doll finished second with a score of 213 and an extra $2037.74 in his pocket. Third place and $1574.62 went to Chelsey Willick aboard Starlights Stylish sired by Grays Starlight out of Stylish Sugar with a score of 210.5. Chris Cutter and Jacs Claim To Fame, sired by Boots Rayo Jac out of Sherries Kid scored 202.5 which made them eligible for the money. The pair earned $926.25. Fifth place and $500 went to David McNiece on A Famous Imagination, sired by A Famous Amos out of Peppy Pines Image. The Ltd Non Pro Futurity Championship went to Chelsey Willick of Sundre, Alberta. Chelsey earned $1042.63 with a score of 210.5. The Reserve Champion was Chris Cutter on Jacs Claim To Fame with a score of 202.5. Chris earned $810.94 in addition to his fourth place winnings in the Non Pro Futurity. David McNiece snuck into third place, earning a$463.39. Saturday evening, the CRBC Open and Ltd Open Derby competitors did not disappoint the crowd. The Open Derby Championship provided some of the best reining ever seen on Canadian soil. Troy Heikes set the pace high with a score of 222.5, on Jacs Electric Spark sired by Shining Spark out of Miss Hello Hollywood. Then Dean Brown rode in on Hickory Smoked Chex, sired by Chex In My Pocket out of Nino Hickory Lady. It was a hat raising run to a score of 226.5. The entertainment was electrifying, as Dean held the lead until draw 19 when Duane Latimer knew what he had to do and did it on Sagebrush Whiz.
The crowd went wild as Duane showed everyone what he and Sagebrush could do by scoring a 227 and winning $15,000. And providing James Ward of Marietta, Oklahoma with a stallion award. Dean Brown and Hickory Smoked Chex placed second, collecting $6694.88. Following close behind was Troy Heikes on Jacs Electric Spark, winning the pair $5781.94.Fourth place went to Jason Grimshaw and Sparks Well Dun, sired by Shining Spark out of Oakwoods Jomar Dunit, owned by Sonja Myrstol. Jason scored 221.5, earning $3043.13. Fifth place and a pay check of $2738.82 went to Cody Sapergia and Shiners Q Chex, with a score of 219.5. Patrice St. Onge and Hot Hollywood Jewels just made the money with a score of 219, which earned $2434.50. The Ltd Open Derby Championship went to Kevin Pole and JO Topline, sired by Topline Eldorado out of Kimba Lee, owned by George Chronik. The pair's score of 216 earned them $3079.12. Second place went to Moon Shine Sailor, sired by Durable Shine out of Sheza Juan Step. A score of 215 earned them $2309.34. A score of 213.5 tied Guy Robertson on Dun It Naturally and Jim Anderson on Brassy Merit for third place. Both Guy and Jim collected a pay check for $1154.67.
The Non Pro Derby Championship went to Sally Broten on Mega Ditto, sired by Marthas Mega Jac out of Okie Dokie Dunnit with a score of 221.5. Sally and Mega Ditto earned $5000. The Reserve Champion went to Samantha Griffin on Whiz N Tag Chex, sired by Topsail Whiz out of Tag Chex with a score of 217.5. The pair earned $3886.13. The CRBC Non Pro Derby was a mile marker for both Mega Ditto and Whiz N Tag Chex, as their earnings pushed them over the $100,000 mark. Continuing on third place went to Susan Strelioff and Listos Last Hobby, sired by Listo Politto Lena out of May Day Hobby. With a score of 216.5, the pair earned $2878.62. Fourth place went to Greg Gottschalk on PB Smoken with a score of 216.5. Gregg earned $1439.30. Fifth place went to Shelley Gunderman and Fancy Footprint, sired by Footworks Finest. With a score of 215, Shelley collected a check for $1295.38. Bonna Jean Bateman aboard Kim's Amigo scored 211.5 with earnings of $500. The Ltd Non Pro Derby Championship went to Shelly Gunderman and Fancy Footwork. They pair collected $2100.12. Kathryn Meintsma and Solanos Seventeen scored 212 which earned them $1575.09. Third place went to Bonna Jean Batemean and Kim's Amigo with a score of 211.5. The pair won $1050.06. Fourth place went to Jim McGhee and Total Wright Off with a score of 207, which earned them $525.03. With dedication and hard work, the CRBC's goal is to promote the reining industry in Canada. The Griffin's are avid supporters and participants in the NRHA and NRBC and started the CRBC in 2003. The CRBC has many friends who continue to support and promote the program to horse lovers across the world.
